Before you hire a countertop fabricator, ask who cuts and who installs the countertops, how they measure, what the quote includes, whether you can see the actual slab, where the seams will go, how long it will take, what you need to do to get ready, what happens after installation, and how much experience they have. Put the same questions to every company and you’ll be comparing like with like.
There are good fabricators of every size across Kitchener, Waterloo, Cambridge and Guelph, and they don’t all work the same way. Some cut in-house and some send work out. Some install with their own crews and some use subcontractors. None of these answers is automatically wrong, but you should know them before you sign. Below, each question comes with why it matters and, where it applies, how we handle it at KW Countertop.
1. Do you fabricate the countertops yourselves, and where?
Why it matters: Some companies sell and measure but have another shop cut the stone. That can work well, but it adds a handoff, and you’ll want to know who is responsible if a piece doesn’t fit. A nearby shop also makes it easier to adjust or recut a piece if something changes.
Our answer: We fabricate in our own facility in Kitchener, where slabs are cut on a BACA Systems Robo SawJet robotic saw and finished in the same building. Read more on why local fabrication matters.

2. Who will install my countertops?
Why it matters: Installation is where the template and the fabrication either come together or don’t. Installers fit the pieces, set the seams, mount undermount sinks and make sure everything sits level. If the crew works for the company that made your tops, one team answers for the result. If the work is subcontracted, ask who the installers are and who you call if something needs attention.
Our answer: Installation is done by our own in-house crews. We never subcontract it.

3. How and when do you measure?
Why it matters: A countertop is only as accurate as its template. Ask how they measure and what has to be finished before they arrive. Usually that means cabinets installed, level and secured, with the sink, faucet and cooktop details decided.
Our answer: We use precise digital laser templating. Our guide to preparing for templating and installation lists what to have ready.
4. Can I see and choose the actual slab?
Why it matters: Every slab of natural stone is different, and even veined quartz changes across a slab. Choosing from a small sample can mean a surprise on installation day. Ask whether you can view full slabs and see how your pieces will be laid out before anything is cut.
Our answer: Our Kitchener location has a 10,000 sq ft stone gallery of full slabs, half slabs and remnants, and you can search the online inventory by name, brand, type, size and colour before you visit. See how to choose a slab at a stone gallery for what to bring.
5. What exactly does the quote include?
Why it matters: Two quotes for the same kitchen can look far apart simply because one includes more. Check each quote for:
- Material, brand and specific colour
- Thickness and edge profile
- Sink, faucet and cooktop cutouts
- The sink and faucet, if you’re buying them through the fabricator
- Templating and installation
- Removal and disposal of the old countertops
- Disconnecting and reconnecting plumbing
Our answer: We sell sinks, faucets and accessories, so they can go on the same quote as your countertops. Our guide to what sets the price of a new countertop explains each line.
6. Where will the seams go?
Why it matters: Many kitchens need at least one seam, especially L-shaped layouts, long runs and large islands. A careful fabricator will show you where the seams fall and explain why. Ask how they match colour and pattern across a seam, and whether a seam can be kept away from the sink or cooktop.
Our post on countertop seams explains what a well-placed seam looks like and what affects its position.
7. How long will it take?
Why it matters: Your countertop schedule affects your plumber, your backsplash installer and how long you’re without a working kitchen. Ask how long it takes from templating to installation, and what could hold it up, such as material availability or changes to the layout.
Our answer: When decisions are made and the site is ready, a project can go from vision to installation in as little as one week. Your project coordinator will confirm the timing for your job.
8. What do I need to do before templating and installation?
Why it matters: Delays often come from small things: cabinets that aren’t level, a sink that hasn’t arrived, or a plumber who isn’t booked. A good company tells you clearly which jobs are yours and which are theirs. Ask:
- Do the cabinets need to be installed and secured before templating?
- Who disconnects and reconnects the plumbing and the cooktop?
- Do I need to clear the counters and the cabinets underneath?
- Does someone need to be home on installation day?
Our answer: Our FAQ page and preparation guide cover these, and your project coordinator will confirm the details for your home.
9. What happens after installation?
Why it matters: Countertops are meant to last for many years, so you want to know who to call if a seam needs attention, a sink needs adjusting or you have a care question. Ask what support the company offers after installation, what care instructions you’ll receive, and to have any coverage explained in writing.
Our answer: We provide after-sales support and work toward 100% customer satisfaction on every job. Ask your project coordinator about the details for your project when you book.
10. How long have you been doing this, and can I see your work?
Why it matters: Experience shows in the details: tight seams, clean cutouts, level installs and a smooth process. Ask how long the company has been fabricating, what kinds of projects they handle, and whether you can visit a showroom to see materials and finished work.
Our answer: We’ve been fabricating and installing countertops since 1997, with 130,000 installations across residential, commercial and multi-unit projects. Our Kitchener showroom and stone gallery and our Guelph showroom are open seven days a week. You can read more about us.
Comparing the answers
Write down each company’s answers as you go. Look for clear, specific replies rather than general reassurance, and if one quote is much lower than the rest, check what it leaves out before deciding. The right fit is the company whose process you understand and whose answers suit your project, not always the lowest number.
If you’d like to put these questions to us, request a quote or stop by the Kitchener stone gallery, and we’ll walk you through how your project would run from templating to installation.
