What granite is

Granite is natural stone, quarried in blocks and sliced into slabs. Its colour and movement come from the minerals it formed with, so no two slabs are alike, and the slab you see is the slab you get.

That’s why we keep full slabs in our Kitchener stone gallery. Walking the slabs lets you see the whole pattern, pick the piece you love and decide with us where the veining should fall on your island or around your sink.

Granite edge options

Granite suits every common profile. On boldly patterned stone, simpler edges usually look best; ogee and bevel suit quieter granites. Ogee and full bullnose need a 3 cm slab.

Good to know before you choose granite

Everyday care

  • Clean with warm water and a pH-neutral stone cleaner.
  • Wipe up oils, wine and acidic spills promptly.
  • Reseal on the schedule your stone needs.
Full care guide
  • Sealing

Granite is porous to varying degrees. A periodic sealer keeps oils and wine from soaking in; how often depends on the stone, and we’ll tell you what yours needs.

  • Heat and the outdoors

Granite handles heat well and stands up to sun and weather, which makes it a good fit for outdoor kitchens and fireplaces. Trivets still protect the sealer and avoid thermal shock.

  • Pattern and seams

Bold movement looks best when seams and cut-outs are planned around it. Choosing your actual slab means we can lay out each piece before anything is cut.

Granite countertop questions

Still have a question? Call (519) 894-1991 or see all our answers.

Does granite need to be sealed?

Yes, periodically. Granite is natural and porous to varying degrees, and a sealer keeps oils and liquids from soaking in. How often depends on the stone; we’ll tell you what your slab needs.

Can I choose my exact granite slab?

Yes. Because every slab is different, we encourage you to walk the full slabs in our 10,000 sq ft stone gallery in Kitchener and pick the one you want.

Is granite good for outdoor kitchens?

Granite handles heat, sun and weather well, which is why it’s a common choice for outdoor kitchens and fireplaces. Sealing and the right cleaner keep it looking its best.

Why are homeowners choosing granite over marble?

Granite is harder and less sensitive to acids than marble, so it etches and scratches less in a working kitchen. Read why homeowners are moving from marble to quartz and granite.
