What quartz is
Quartz countertops are engineered stone: natural quartz, ground and bound with resins and pigments, then pressed into slabs. Because the pattern is designed rather than quarried, colour and veining stay consistent from slab to slab, which makes long runs and large islands easier to match.
The resin makes the surface non-porous, so quartz resists stains and never needs sealing. It’s the most popular choice we install in busy family kitchens, condos and rental units across Kitchener-Waterloo.

Quartz edge options
Quartz takes every common profile. Ogee and full bullnose need the thickness of a 3 cm slab; on 2 cm quartz, a mitred edge gives the same heavy look.

Good to know before you choose quartz
Everyday care
- Wipe up with warm water and a mild dish soap.
- Skip abrasive pads and harsh chemicals such as oven cleaner or bleach.
- Use cutting boards and trivets to protect the finish.
Heat
The resin that keeps quartz non-porous can scorch or discolour under direct high heat. Use trivets for hot pots and pans, and check the manufacturer’s guidance for your product.
Indoors only, in most cases
Long exposure to direct sunlight can fade or yellow many quartz products, so most manufacturers don’t recommend them outdoors. For outdoor kitchens, look at porcelain or granite instead.
Seams
Slabs have a maximum size, so large L-shapes and long islands may need a seam. Consistent patterns make seams easier to hide, and we plan their placement with you at templating.
Quartz countertop questions
Still have a question? Call (519) 894-1991 or see all our answers.
Does quartz need to be sealed?
No. Quartz is non-porous, so it resists stains without sealing. Day-to-day cleaning with warm water and mild soap is all it needs.
Can I put a hot pan on a quartz countertop?
It’s best not to. Direct high heat can scorch or discolour the resin in quartz, so use a trivet or hot pad for pots and pans straight off the stove or out of the oven.
Is quartz better than granite?
Neither is better for everyone. Quartz is consistent and needs no sealing; granite is natural, one of a kind and handles heat well but needs periodic sealing. Our granite vs quartz guide compares them in detail.
